Hands For Peacemaking Foundation

Guatemala Facts

Guatemala is the largest and most populous of the Central American countries with a GDP per capita roughly one-half of that of Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The agricultural sector accounts for about one-fourth of the GDP, two-thirds of the exports and half of the labor force. Key crops are coffee, cardamom, sugar and bananas.

The 1996 peace accords signing ended 36 years of civil war and removed a major obstacle to foreign investment. Unfortunately, there has been widespread political violence and corruption scandals that continue to dampen investor confidence.

Today, Guatemalan rural communities can expect the following “standard of living:”

1. 80% malnutrition

2. 50% without access to proper or adequate sanitation

3. 48% live without access to clean water

4. 80% illiteracy rate

5. 43% school age children not attending school

6. 46 out of 1,000 babies die by the age 5
