SAN MIGUELITO
San Miguelito is a picturesque community nestled within the village of Siglo XX (20th Century), in the municipality of Barillas, which is part of the Huehuetenango department in Guatemala. The community is situated 24 miles from downtown Barillas, positioned at an elevation of 1,079 feet above sea level. The journey to San Miguelito requires a two-hour drive, traversing both paved and gravel roads, ideally suited for four-wheel-drive vehicles due to the varying terrain.
San Miguelito was established in 1978, marking the beginning of a new chapter for families from San Miguel Acatan who ventured to this area in search of fertile land. These pioneering families were successful in their quest and subsequently named their new village San Miguelito, in homage to their place of origin. The founding of San Miguelito represents a significant milestone in the history of these families, who sought new opportunities and a better life.
The community of San Miguelito is home to approximately 480 residents who are organized into 80 families. The village's population is characterized by a strong sense of community and cooperation, with families working together to maintain their way of life. Traditional customs and cultural practices are integral to the community's identity, reflecting the heritage and values of its inhabitants.
In San Miguelito, most villagers rely on firewood for cooking, either using open fires or inefficient stoves. This traditional method of cooking is deeply ingrained in the community's way of life, despite its inefficiencies and potential health risks.
The economy of San Miguelito is primarily based on agriculture, with families cultivating crops and raising livestock to sustain their livelihoods. The fertile land and favorable climate provide ideal conditions for farming, which is the mainstay of the community's economy.
The local economy of San Miguelito is characterized by modest earnings and a reliance on agriculture for both subsistence and income. Villagers earn approximately $13.00 per day for their labor. Many travel to the United States and Mexico to work and send money back to their families. The primary crops grown include corn, coffee, and cardamom, though most agricultural production is for personal consumption. Coffee and cardamom are the primary products sold. Additionally, villagers spend around $67.00 or more per month on firewood when they need to purchase it.
Health care for the villagers is a significant concern due to its scarcity. A nurse visits the village only twice a week to provide basic medical care. For more extensive medical needs, villagers must travel to San Ramon, where they can access services daily. In the local community, one villager serves as a midwife, offering care and assistance to pregnant women.
One of the primary requests from the villagers is for Aller Stoves and EcoFilter water filtration systems for all 80 families in the community. This need is critical as it would greatly improve their cooking conditions and overall quality of life.
San Miguelito is a vibrant community with a rich history and a strong sense of identity. The village's origins, demographics, and way of life offer a unique glimpse into the resilience and resourcefulness of its inhabitants. While challenges persist, the community's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and exploring new opportunities for growth and development is a testament to its enduring spirit. #heartofguatemala

“With our [Aler] stove we are saving around $140 a year—that is a huge help to our economy! The look of our kitchen has improved a lot, and we no longer have the risk of our children falling into the fire.”
